| Monster touchscreens run Windows XP Embedded |
Nov. 11, 2008
Samsung announced four touchscreen displays that measure up to 82-inches, while targeting interactive signage applications. The "TSn" series displays have built-in Windows XP Embedded (XPe) computers based on AMD Athlon64 X2 processors, 1GB of RAM, and 4GBs of flash.

Samsung's new touchscreens are known as the 400TSn, 460TSn, 700TSn, and 820TSn, with diagonal screen measurements of 40, 46, 70, and 82 inches, respectively. All use S-PVA (super patterned vertical alignment) liquid crystal displays, with integrated infrared touchscreen capabilities, according to the company. Although Samsung did not specify, infrared touchscreens typically use an array of vertical and horizontal IR sensors, and thus require no screen overlays and have no moving mechanical parts.
Samsung's massive 820TSn is a touchscreen display on a grand scale All four devices can play back presentations, stream video, and connect to a LAN or a WAN without the aid of any external device, Samsung says. Each incorporates a computer based on an AMD dual-core, 2.3GHz Athlon64 X2 CPU, RS690T northbridge, and AMD's SB600 southbridge. The systems boast accelerated 2D/3D graphics, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 4GB of flash memory, and an Ethernet interface, according to the company.
Like earlier "intelligent" displays from Samsung, such as the non-touchscreen 400UXn and 460UXn, the screens are capable of being driven by external computers or video devices, via a bevy of standard interfaces. For use with PCs, all four models have VGA and DVI ports, while the 700TSn and 820TSn add BNC connectors. For use with video devices, all have composite and HDMI inputs; the 700TSn and 820TSn supplement these with S-Video and component interfaces.
Samsung's Magicnet Pro According to Samsung, its touchscreen displays may be programmed with content over a network connection by one or more PCs running Samsung's Magicnet Pro software. As seen above, Magicnet Pro has a simple, drag-and-drop user interface, includes asset-management features, and can be used to view any given display's fan speed, temperature, or backlighting status, Samsung says.
The 400TSn, 460TSn, 700TSn, and 820TSn each include three USB ports, built-in stereo speakers, and VGA outputs that can drive a supplemental external screen, says Samsung. Brightness and contrast ratings vary, but are listed below.
